After 55 years of neglect, elephant finally gets to bathe – then does something no one was prepared for

After a lifetime of captivity, the 67-year-old elephant known as Phoolkali has finally secured sanctuary, where she now enjoys rejuvenating baths. The plight of wild animals underscores the imperative for them to inhabit their natural environments, yet tragically, many endure suffering due to human cruelty and negligence.

Phoolkali, whose name translates to “flower bed,” endured years of neglect and abuse, as reported by the Daily Mail. Rescued in 2012 at the age of 55, she bears physical scars, including blindness in one eye and weakened legs, attributable to mistreatment.

Describing her ordeal, SOS Wildlife recounts, “Blind in the right eye and debilitated in her limbs, Phoolkali endured a harrowing existence, compelled to beg for sustenance by an indifferent owner. Subjected to the rigors of navigating congested streets under the threat of physical coercion, she suffered both physically and psychologically, her spirit broken.”

Thankfully, dedicated individuals strive tirelessly to rescue animals like Phoolkali, offering them a chance to escape lives of deprivation and hardship.

At the age of 67, she has found solace and fulfillment at an elephant sanctuary adjacent to the Taj Mahal in Agra, where she can finally embrace the life she richly deserves. Within this sanctuary lies a sizable pool, where she luxuriates in bathing, finding solace, and facilitating relaxation for the resident elephants.

According to Kartick Satyanarayan of the esteemed Wildlife SOS organization, speaking to the Daily Mail, ‘Elephants exhibit a profound fondness for the pool, often revealing tears of joy—a stark contrast to the years of cruelty they endured.’

A heartening video shared by Wildlife SOS vividly illustrates her profound enjoyment of these baths, undoubtedly touching the hearts of all who cherish animal welfare. The clip showcases Phoolkali, a cherished resident elephant, seamlessly intertwining moments of snacking with the joy of splashing in the hydrotherapy pool.

This heartwarming scene inspires wishes for many more years of contentment and refreshing baths for Phoolkali.
